My week with Lucy By Mia
Hi! I’m Mia, Lucy’s niece and I’ve been doing work experience for the past week at Human Everything. I’ve learnt a lot in just one week surprisingly, about what the world of work looks like not only in HR but also in the running of a business large and small. Which I’m sure you’re all on the edge of your seat to read about.
Turns out work isn’t just how much money a business brings in or trying to develop the best product or service. It’s also about the well-being of the team and how they are doing mentally. Who knew? That’s something I learnt through the meetings I attended, team-building workshops I helped out in and thinking up ideas for future events. Some of my favourite moments this week were a workshop I helped out in where I met a fellow work experiencer (Is that a word? oh well it is now) where we got to know each other through our shared interest in sports and sociology. Another surprising highlight was the first job that I did in a charity which was documenting all of the new donations they received. There was something quite therapeutic about it. So yeah some of my favourite bits had nothing to do with HR. Sorry Lucy!
I decided to spend my week with Lucy because A. she’s my aunt but B. I was interested in what starting a small business would be like and what the benefits and negatives are. For example, you can decide your own working hours but there isn’t any sick pay or annual leave. So in the afternoons when we would go into a very peaceful office to see what how a small business works. Turns out it takes a lot of networking, analytics tracking, grit and coffee that tastes vile. This week I’ve been busy creating a social media calendar, editing surveys and designing leaflets with my non-existent artistic abilities which, in my humble opinion, look pretty good.
Anyways, some skills I think I’ve developed is confidence with talking to new people and professionalism which is all very important in the working world or so people tell me. Another thing I’ve learnt is that HR isn’t just about hiring and firing, it’s also the connections within a team and how to strengthen them to knit the company together.
I also wanted to say a quick thank you to all the companies which I met this week, they’ve been extremely generous to allow me to be nosy and ask questions in their already very busy work day.
Through the power of Edward (A cat) and cream cheese bagels I survived my first work experience. Thank you for taking the time to read
